Burials in cemeteries can introduce hazardous substances into groundwater, falling under the EU Groundwater Daughter Directive and now regulated by the Environmental Permitting (England & Wales) Regulations 2016 (EPR 2016). Pollution of controlled waters without a permit is an offence, and with increasing demand for clean water, industries, including cemeteries, face tighter regulations.
The Environment Agency plans to extend environmental permitting to cemeteries to manage these risks. Proper greywater management is essential, as mishandling poses hazards to staff, the public, and the environment. However, retrofitting drainage systems in existing cemeteries is often costly and difficult.
A practical solution is to pump and store greywater in a secure on-site tank. The CDS Group specialises in designing greywater management systems based on site conditions. Their system uses a mobile bowser with a pump to transfer greywater from burial sites to a storage tank, reducing exposure and environmental risks.
Once the tank reaches 75% capacity, we can assess whether the greywater can be discharged on-site or requires off-site disposal. If contamination is found, we will arrange for safe disposal through external contractors.
