The CDS Group Wins Planning Permission for a New Crematorium for Bolsover District Council

The application received unanimous votes in favour at the planning committee. Councillor Derek Adams congratulated the CDS Group for their work on the project, commenting: “I think it’s a fantastic design”.

The CDS Group achieve planning permission for new Muslim burial ground in Kempston, Bedfordshire

The CDS Group achieved planning for a new Muslim faith cemetery at Bedford Borough Council Chambers on the 18th July. CDS were the lead consultants on the application; providing environmental, design, project management and planning services to deliver the project. The scheme is set to provide a significant need for burial provision for the Muslim community in Bedfordshire and the application had the support from over 450 local residents.

Cemetery Waste – An issue not to be buried

Operational burial facilities across the UK all have one thing in common, they produce excess burial arisings during their operational processes, which requires temporary storage on site prior to subsequent off site disposal to a licensed landfill site. However many sites across the UK are undertaking practices which breach the current statutory requirements for waste management, leaving them liable to fines from the Environment Agency and HMRC.

A CDS Review of the new EA Guidance - Protecting Groundwater From Human Burials – Environmental Permit Requirements from 1st April 2022

The Environment Agency published an update to the guidance surrounding cemeteries and environmental permitting, which has since superseded all previous guidance notes as off 1st April 2022. This update is separate from the recent DEFRA review, which is yet to be published. This document aims to provide our clients with a simple review of the major changes identified in the updated guidance and how these changes may impact the operation of a limited number of existing cemeteries and the impacts the changes will have to proposed cemetery extensions and new cemetery sites going through planning after 1st April 2022. Please read our other guidance document regarding the changes to good practice which will impact existing cemeteries.

BBC South Today - Burials Feature with Alexis Green featuring the Environmental Stewardship Group, Memoria and The CDS Group.

The CDS Group helped to support an article published by BBC South Today on the Environmental Impact of the bereavement sector and the challenges faced in leading the sector towards sustainability. We were delighted to see that a historically 'taboo' subject had made it into the light and we hope this can be the catalyst for real change in the sector.

On the 1st March 2021 the Bereavement Sector saw the launch of a collaboration between the Cremation Society of Great Britain, the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management, the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities and The CDS Group under the title of the Environmental Stewardship Group.

Dacorum Borough Council

Working on behalf of Dacorum Borough Council, The CDS Group are delighted to see the construction of the new cemetery progressing well and on schedule. From investigating the site for suitability as a cemetery through to both the building and landscape design, planning and now construction; we have thoroughly enjoyed working with Dacorum Borough Council on this exciting project. We are looking forward to official open day of operation in Spring 2020.

Bedford Cemetery

Following ongoing issues of surface water flooding in the recent extension area of Norse Road Cemetery, Bedford, The CDS Group were commissioned to undertake an assessment of the issues observed on site and to design an engineered drainage solution to resolve the issue. Our in house drainage team headed by Alex Vickers designed a solution to the surface water problem.

Syston Cemetery

Syston Cemetery was formally opened this month by the local MP Edward Argar. CDS designed the cemetery and building and have worked closely with the Council to ensure a smooth transition from design, through tender process and on to the formal opening.
