Bedford Cemetery Drainage Solution

Bedford Cemetery Extension: Drainage Solution

CDS were approached by Bedford Town Council regarding surface water issues at the recently opened extension at Norse Road Cemetery, Bedford. The surface conditions at Norse Road were making the excavation and reopening of graves difficult. In addition, access to graves for family members was also proving to be a challenge in some areas due to wet, slippery under-foot conditions causing distress to loved ones.

The Council were keen to come up with a way of improving conditions across the extension without losing burial space; approaching CDS to design a drainage scheme to relieve the surface water problems.

CDS were able to carry out an initial assessment of the site which included a site visit, a review of drainage options and a detailed topographic survey. Once completed, CDS designed a site-specific drainage solution, accommodating the client’s requirements and ensuring the design was suitable for predicted increased and prolonged rainfall events inline with current SuDs guidance.

Following the client’s acceptance of the proposed design, CDS produced a detailed drainage specification document and construction drawings for the tendering process which was overseen by theCDS team.

CDS acted as the client’s agent throughout the construction phase; completing site inspections, works valuation assessments and quality checks. The construction works have been completed and final surface topping and seeding has taken place
